Houseflies (Musca domestica)
Appearance:
Dark gray Adult house flies can grow to one-quarter of an inch long and usually live between 15 and 25 days.
Habits:
Houseflies are attracted to any accessible food or organic waste. As they are only able to feed on liquids they turn many solid foods into a liquid so they can digest.
Threats:
Houseflies have been known to carry over 100 varieties of disease-causing germs, which render them unwelcome house guests. In particular, houseflies can transmit a wide range of disease-causing microbes, including those responsible for food poisoning, dysentery, tuberculosis, cholera and parasitic worm infections.
Prevention:
Organic material should not be left where it might attract flies. Remove trash regularly and use well-sealing garbage receptacles. Use Fly screens on doors and windows to prevent fly entry.
